Laugh – it is said that laughter is a broom that
sweeps away the cobwebs of the heart and in some ways that is true. When you
laugh it causes the release of endorphins which relieves stress by causing you
to feel happy. Happy people live longer.
Love – I often say that human beings were not
created to be alone. Everybody needs somebody to love and to receive love from.
Whether the love comes from family, spouse or friends, it fosters the feeling
of belonging, comfort and happiness. Contentment in a place where you feel you
belong reduces worry and stress thus causes a reduction in illnesses caused by
same.
Exercise – exercise tones your muscles, both of the
musculoskeletal system and of the heart. It gets the heart rate up and blood
circulation flowing right.
This helps to maintain a normal blood pressure, thus
you live longer due to the absence of certain chronic illnesses like
Hypertension.
Eat right – food is the fuel that
keeps your body going. If you do not eat healthy foods then it is less likely
you will have a healthy life.
Work – when a person has a means of earning an
income, he is less worried about providing for himself and family. Less worry
means less stress, less stress means less illnesses that are stress-related
thus longer life. Also, work brings about self-actualization which causes
mental relief knowing that you have achieved and this causes happiness.
Have Periodic Health Assessments – it is
recommended by the Medical Association that adults between the ages of 18 and
40 should have a health assessment at least once every five years and once
every one to three years if you are older. This facilitates early detection and
treatment of diseases, some of which can even be cured. Persons who have
Chronic Diseases, like, Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension will have more
frequent doctor’s appointments. Keeping your doctor’s appointments, taking your
medications as ordered and conforming to certain lifestyle modifications can
prolong your life significantly.
Entertain yourself – “All work and no play
make Jack a dull boy” everyone needs an avenue by which stress can be relieved.
What to do after a stressful day at the office? What to do after a hard week of
work events? Or what to do after competing for a long time in a tight
challenge? That is a bubbling question, “what to do…?” having no means of
entertainment to relieve stress can be frustrating. One needs to plan healthy
fun activities to do to relieve stress, like, dancing, listening to music, go
to a concert with friends, go out for dinner at your favourite restaurant, go
shopping or anything that stimulates laughter and healthy fun. Finding a hobby
is useful as well.
Rest and Sleep – when all is said and
done, the human body needs periodic time out from physical and mental
activities. Rest and sleep are necessary to restore your strength. Exhaustion
affects the immune system negatively and when your immune system is low
functioning then you are more exposed to opportunistic infections which
compromise your health. When you get adequate rest and sleep it replenishes
your immune system thus making you healthier and causes you to live longer.
